MORE ABOUT HOWLING HOG SOAP
TIPS
ESSENTIAL OILS, NOT FRAGRANCES--Face it fragrances smell great. And we like good smelling soap. However, the FDA does not require companies to break down the fragrance ingredients. Thus, any "fragrance" is an unknown quantity and should be avoided (Source 1). Some of the hidden chemicals might be hormone interrupters and cause allergic reactions (Source 2). Howling hog uses steam-procured essential oils and actual herbs, such as rosemary, for scent. Additional Articles: Source 3, Source 4
A MOISTURIZING COMBINATION OF OILS--I started with olive oil. I wanted maximum moisturizing. But, as I've experimented with the soapmaking process, I've added coconut oil to create a harder soap (not too much that might dry out skin, of course) and a palm oil, grapeseed oil (with lots of vitamin E), etc. Several people have stated that, after using my soaps, they use less body lotion because their skin doesn't feel dry after a shower.
EXFOLIATION--Sugar and Oatmeal act as gentle exfoliates.
ACNE--my two teenage daughters love the oatmeal soap for their face and swear that they have less acne because of my soap.
- Store soap in a well drained dish so it doesn't get soggy.
- I keep several soaps in my shower, preferring a peppermint combination soap in mornings, a lavender if showering in the evenings, a eucalyptus for its natural insect repellant qualities if I'm going to be picking blackberries or hiking, etc.
